There are few people in the world revered more than the King of Thailand and he is part of what makes Thailand the country it is. Never make derogatory comments about the royal family as they are all loved and highly respected by the Thai people. Thailand has a population of around 60 million with various estimates of up to 12 million living in and around Bangkok. Outside of Bangkok and the central plain the country is rural except some of the known tourist resorts. There are three seasons: the cold, the hot and the wet season but the temperature will feel hot to most Westerners. It is quite pleasant in the "cold" season from November to March. In the North it can even be quite cold during the cold season in the evenings. Buddhism is the main religion (about 95%) with a small Moslem population in the South. There are an also few Christian Thai families. Buddhism is a way of life to most Thais and they would take great offence at any derogatory comments against it. Although most are devoutly religious they accept other religions freely. The language how can I learn some Thai before I come to Thailand? Best advice is - do not try unless you have a native Thai speaker who has the necessary skills! As a tonal language with a written language based in Sanskrit the many western vocabularies used in teaching you will do more damage than good. To re-learn all the tones that will be wrong will take twice as long as learning from scratch when you arrive. Be warned that for some reason many Thai ladies do not like their partner trying to speak Thai.
The culture Normal good manners and neatness and tidiness will take you a long way towards being accepted by Thai people. Their life style is reminiscent of many countries lifestyles of a bygone era. Politeness to each other and an acceptance of authority is part of their life. Being tidy there is a Thai word that means being tidy but also with a little deeper sense of being tidy of spirit. It means a lot to Thai people that they and their partners are seen to be neat and tidy. Remember this in all your dealings in Thailand especially when you come to meet a lady. Touching a lady Thais really hate being touched or fondled in public and this includes anywhere where another person is around such as in taxis. Even the normal peck on the cheek common in the West embarrasses them. Don't do it and be led by your partner in this matter. Please notice that Thai ladies from the bars do accept this, even though most of them don’t like it. It is a question about surviving and getting the daily meal. The feet most people who come to Thailand know that the soles of the feet are inferior parts of the body and it is insulting to show them to people, how this works is a little more difficult. Most Thai ladies sit with their feet firmly planted on the ground. This is an uncomfortable position for many people so the following can help. Make sure if you cross your legs that the soles of the feet point down.
This becomes comfortable very quickly. When you do this make sure that the toe does not point towards anybody as this is considered threatening. When sat with your feet under a table this may be ignored. The head Do not touch or fondle another person’s head even children. In some cases it is taken very seriously and can ruin a friendship. This does not include your partner but if you do have the unbearable urge to touch a partner's long hair when you first meet say the equivalent of "may I?" Again be guided by your partner as older people are considered wiser and touching a child's head may not be taken as offensive. Extravagant gestures and loud voices Do not wave madly or point or shout at someone. When you are beckoning someone always keep the palm of you hand and fingers down and beckon gently. A Thai would normally beckon a taxi with a gentle wave. Westerners can be even less extravagant as a taxi driver can usually spot the lifting of your eyebrow at 100 meters unless it is raining at which time revert to form. Do not raise your voice and when haggling in the markets smile and make a game of it always. It becomes great fun. Men - not the male sex just a bad smell Most Thais will never put on clothing a second time.
Get into the habit that your partner will wrinkle her nose at any clothing worn before and pronounce "men" (smells bad) as opposed to "hom" (smells good). Protect with your life any favorite clothing that you would normally dry clean. If you intend living in Thailand only buy clothes that can withstand incessant laundering. Saying thank you there are many levels of saying thank you in Thai, which your partner can teach you. Because of this, don't throw in the Thai words where you would normally use them in your own country. Thais would not normally thank people for a service such as when you buy something or visit a restaurant. So until you have a partner to help you, just use the English thank you or the thank you of your own language. It makes you feel good and is understood by the Thais. The Wai Again the form of greeting where the Thais put their hands together in front of the face is used often but with many levels and distinctions. The use by airline staff and staff in restaurants etc. is part of the tourist face of Thailand and would not normally be acknowledged with a "way" by Thais. Again acknowledge it with a smile and a nod and they will not be offended. Until you have expert help on the levels, who does it first and for how long always, acknowledge it with a wide smile and nod? For those of you who do want to try it, well the Thais will smile and won't be offended. |
